Nam Cao - keeping a craft alive
A journey into one of Vietnam's oldest weaving traditions, and the people who continue to carry it forward.
Leaving the pace of the city behind, we travelled to Thai Binh and Ninh Binh in search of something quieter. That journey led us to Nam Cao, where the story of a craft has been carried through generations.

Inside a traditional family home, we met artisan Nguyen Dinh Dai, who has devoted much of his life to preserving the heritage of Nam Cao silk. As he spoke about the changing fortunes of the craft, what stayed with us most was not only his knowledge, but his unwavering belief that traditional weaving should continue to provide a meaningful livelihood for the community that has nurtured it for generations.
Today, that commitment lives on through his son, Mr. Thuong.
Together with the artisans of Nam Cao, they continue to weave more than fabric. They preserve a rhythm of life shaped by patience, craftsmanship, and an enduring respect for the material. The raw, breathable texture of Nam Cao silk reflects that spirit, allowing every movement to feel natural and unhurried.

Meeting the people behind the craft reminded us that heritage is not something frozen in the past. It survives through the hands that continue to practise it, the families who choose to carry it forward, and the communities that keep believing in its value.
